About Kutubdia Thana
Kutubdia Upazila (formerly Kutubdia Thana) is an island sub-district (upazila) in Cox’s Bazar District under Chittagong Division, Bangladesh. Established as a police station (thana) in 1917, it was elevated to upazila status in 1983.

Location & Geography:
Covering around 215.79 km², the island stretches roughly 18 miles long and 2 miles wide in the Bay of Bengal, bordered on three sides by the sea. -
Population & Literacy:
As per the 2022 census, the population stands at approximately 143,622, with a literacy rate around the 30–34% mark—below the national average. -
Key Features:
Kutubdia is known for its lighthouse, salt production, and dried fish (“shutki”). It also houses Bangladesh’s largest wind power plant on the island. -
Electricity & Infrastructure:
Thanks to a submarine cable, Kutubdia recently got connected to the national power grid, enabling 24-hour electricity—transforming local life, businesses, and services. -
Administrative Division:
The upazila consists of six union parishads (Ali Akbardeil, Baraghop, Dakshin Dhurung, Kaiyarbil, Lemsikhali, Uttar Dhurung), subdivided into nine mauzas and 55 villages. -
Historical Significance:
The 1917 thana paved the path for local governance leading up to its 1983 upazila status. The island’s name derives from Saint Abdul Malek Shah (Kutub Aulia) and the tomb attributed to him.
